The Secret Life of Harry Houdini
When I was a kid, I read everything I could on Harry Houdini. I think the amateur escape artist (in other words an alcholic) in me admired his professional status. No, he was not "one of us" but some people now think he was a spy. A new biography of Houdini "The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero" suggests that he worked for both Scotland Yard and the US Secret Service. Click here to read more.

The Good, The Bad and The Powerless
From as early as I can remember, I always wanted to be powerful. I sought power and influence in dozens of ways. The more I sought power, the more it eluded me and the drunker I became. Eventually my alcoholism forced me to admit I was powerless or die. In fact the only real power I have ever had has come from admitting that I am powerless.

  Overcoming My Own Limitations
John Wanamaker(1838-1922) inventor of the American department store said:
"I learned thirty years ago that it is foolish to scold. I have enough trouble overcoming my own limitations without fretting over the fact that God has not seen fit to distribute evenly the gift of intelligence."

I Am Not Sure I Should Post This But...
I am not sure I should post this but, Eileen approached me after the morning A.A. meeting. She told me that her animal rescue work is killing her and she might as well just drink. I told Eileen that it was up to her whether she drank or not but, if she wanted to stay sober
we could help her. "That's right it is up to me if I drink or not," she said, and she stomped off incredulously.

  Must Love Cats
I don’t want to dwell on Eileen and her problems but, I have one more thing to share. I worked today so, I did not go to the morning meeting. When I got home this afternoon I had two messages waiting for me. It seems Eileen had brought several pictures on her dead cat’s body to the meeting to share with others. People were appalled. Is it just me or is that just weird? I think Eileen needs much more help than I could possibly give her.

  Come On Eileen
I think I need to go to AlAnon! Not because of any family members but, for my current crop of sponsees.

I got a call from Eileen last night. Eileen is an on again off again sponsee of mine. I would sponsor her if she would let me but, she is too busy. She is too busy to call, too busy to read and too busy to be accountable. So does however, go to meetings.

Anyhow one of Eileen’s cats was killed by a predator yesterday. Eileen is sort of a freelance animal rescuer and has several cats of her own. I let her vent for a while and then tried to gently push her back to The Program.

Long story short, Eileen told me that she was now too busy to go to meetings now because, she had to trap another cat to replace the one who was killed. She went on to say that the other reasons why she was not going to A.A. because the people in the room confused her and we just did not love cats.

Eileen needs your prayers and I need AlAnon.

  Recovery Mental Blog
Alright folks, someone actually found me by searching for "RECOVERY MENTAL BLOG." Note the bolding and the all capital letters! It sort of says it all doesn't it. I actually did laugh out loud on this one.

I understand that in North Korea it is illegal to take a photograph of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, that obscures any part of his face. That's right this is a half-naked picture of Kim Jong-il. It is a good thing I live in America. Posted by Picasa

  Emerging Sideways
I have added a new Blog to my links it is called Emerging Sideways . It is the Blog of a recovering sex addict and it is a very worthwhile read for anyone in any type of recovery.

  Sex, Food and the Puritans

Sex may sell but, not on Outright Mental Defective. What sells on this Blog? What gets the hits and keeps them coming back for more? I will tell you what sells, seventeenth century Puritans and their eating habits. That right, the food that the Pilgrims ate. Just think of sitting down for a big old Thanksgiving feast with a bunch of uptight Puritans. Why, who needs celebrity gossip when you have the Puritans?

Click here to read the original link. And yes I know, I should stop playing with my site meter.

Since I touched on politics and religion in my last few posts, I thought I would keep it simple with some gratitude.

  Uncomfortable in A.A.
Yesterday, I had an uncomfortable experience at a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous that I would like to share. I have a four day weekend so; I was able to attend the Friday Morning meeting. We were on the second step and one person started talking about their experiences growing up a Roman Catholic. All of a sudden it seemed like half the table was sharing about their mostly negative experiences growing up a Roman Catholic.

I was not raised Catholic. My family’s protestant history dates back almost to Martin Luther. I have only been in a Catholic Church about half a dozen times. And, at least one of those times I was there to try to get laid. No offence but, you know where I am coming from on this one.

Anyhow the last person to share was a new guy and he was shaking and almost crying. He essentially yelled at all the people who shared about their negative experiences more or less calling them wimps. He said that he never heard Jews or Methodist complaining about their negative childhood religious experiences, why should Catholics. Like I said, I am not Catholic and the whole “family fight” made me feel uncomfortable and out of place. I am just glad that I was not chairing the meeting.

Won't You Come Home Mark Foley
Former Congressman Mark Foley, who is temporarily America's best known sexual predator, appears to also be "one of us." You may be asking which us, as the personal revelations come flooding out of his publicists office.

I thank God that the Life Raft of A.A. is big enough for all of us.

Piglet gave me an idea(click here), ask everyone what their homepagee is.

My homepage is our (if you live in the United States) National Parks Service. I choose this because I like to think about being on vacation even when I am not.
