  Alcoholics as Bankrupt Idealists

"...Most alcoholics are bankrupt idealist. Nearly everyone of us had wished to do great good, perform great deeds that embodied great ideals. We were perfectionists who, failing to attain perfection, had gone to the other extreme and settled for the bottle and the blackout."

Seems as though "Sally" could use to actually READ your blog...lol.
Hope you are enjoying Sam's 2nd grade days.
I also hope Sam is enjoying 2nd grade! Oh how I loved the 2nd grade. I loved my teacher, Mrs. Lawrence. That was 40 odd years ago and I still remember her.
Peace,
Scout

progress not perfection right?
glad you are sober today:)

A1 spot on the money.

I shall steal that quote for my place, I imagine. :-)

Thanks. :-)

... and your point is?

Love that quote.

I think, IMO, getting sober and working a program of sobriety has taught me that I can be somewhat an idealist as identified here:

"the cherishing or pursuit of high or noble principles, purposes, goals, etc."

I keep to a strict set of guidelines and I hit meetings and I give back. But at 34 I went back to University, I wrote a book and I am teachable, now that I am no longer abusing my body with booze.

I think that it is important to have goals in sobriety and they are useful as well. One cannot spend the rest of ones life inside a room sharing war stories forever. At some point - I climbed my mountain and when I reached that point my sponsor and therapist suggested that I do something with my sobriety, and so I did. It was idealistic, but in small doses and managed well, idealism can be a good thing.

If an alcoholic remains hopeless as the Big Book explains the garden variety or the low bottom drunk, what hope is there for recovery? Sobriety is supposed to teach us self worth and that we are capable of great things once we look at the wreckage of our pasts, we write it down and we deal with it, and share it with God, and another, then we drop the rock and move on.

The gifts and promises of the program of AA are there for you to have if you work for them. Thank you for my sobriety today.

Live - Easy - But - Think - First !!!

I think we can fly based on our mental powers alone.

"Sally's" a spammer. Turn on the word verification feature if you want to prevent spam comments on your blog. (This has been a paid advertisment from Blogger...) ;)

That is really sick of Sally. Really I am disgusted.

OK ~ focus on the topic ~ I struggle letting go of perfectionism. It is my twisted thinking that keeps me feeling like it is a great thing to be a perfectionist. Think it thru and I figure out why it sucks. I will keep coming back ;)

That quote is perfection. Thanks for sharing.
